Average Calculator: Mean, Median & Mode (Free)

Free average calculator—enter numbers for mean, median, and mode. Statistics helper; runs in your browser.

This average calculator returns mean, median, and mode together with a sorted list, a number-line view, and short guidance on when each measure fits.

How to use

  1. Tap a sample list or type numbers (commas, spaces, or line breaks).
  2. Append one value at a time to see means and medians update.
  3. Read the hero mean, number line, sorted row, and sum/min/max stats.

Example

12, 15, 18, 22, 85 → mean ≈ 30.4 but median 18 (outlier pulls the mean).

For spread, pair with the standard deviation calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What are mean, median, and mode?

Mean = sum ÷ count. Median = middle value after sorting (average of two middles when n is even). Mode = most frequent value(s).

When use median instead of mean?

With outliers, the mean gets pulled toward extremes; the median often describes a “typical” value better. Try the “one high outlier” sample on the page.

Why is mode sometimes empty?

If every value is unique, there is no mode. When frequencies tie at the top, all tied values are listed.

How do I enter numbers?

Separate with commas, spaces, or line breaks; append one value at a time, or use sample lists. Empty tokens are skipped.

Median with an even count?

With an even count, the median is the average of the two middle values after sorting (e.g. 20 and 30 → 25).

Link to standard deviation?

This page is central tendency; the standard deviation calculator measures spread. Use both for a fuller picture.

Decimals and negatives?

Yes—positive/negative decimals are fine. Do not mix in text; convert percents to decimals first.

Can I save my inputs?

Yes. Copy link below the form keeps your current inputs so you can share the scenario or save it for later.
