Auto Refinance Calculator: Savings & Break-Even

Free auto refinance calculator—same balance, new rate & term vs current payment. Monthly savings, break-even on fees, interest saved. In browser.

How to use the auto refinance calculator

  1. Current loan: remaining balance, APR, remaining term.
  2. New loan: quoted APR and new term on the same balance.
  3. Closing costs: fees to refinance; break-even ≈ costs ÷ monthly payment savings when the new payment is lower.
  4. Compare payment change, break-even months, and lifetime interest saved. A lower payment with a longer term may still pay more total interest.
  5. New purchase payment: auto loan calculator. Same math as mortgage refinance.

When refinancing may help

Material rate drop, better credit, or term change. If you will sell or pay off soon, break-even may exceed your holding period. Vehicle age/mileage caps are not modeled here.

Frequently asked questions

Is auto refinance the same as mortgage refinance?

Same structure on the remaining balance—compare payments, total interest, and optional fees. This page defaults to auto-sized examples; use mortgage refinance for homes and auto loan for new purchases.

How do I enter balance and remaining term?

Balance is what you still owe today; remaining term is how many months/years are left on the current schedule. The new term can match the remainder (rate drop only) or stretch (lower payment, possibly more total interest).

What is break-even?

When the new payment is lower, break-even ≈ closing costs ÷ monthly savings—months until fee recovery from payment difference alone. If payment rises, break-even may not apply; focus on total interest and cash flow needs.

Why can a lower payment still cost more interest?

A longer new term lowers the payment but extends interest accrual—total interest can rise versus a same-term rate drop. Compare both total-interest lines and try the same-term preset.

What belongs in closing costs?

Enter one-time lender and title fees for the refinance bundle in your quote—varies by state. Insurance or gap products are not modeled; zero fees means break-even reflects payment difference only.

Should I refinance if I will sell soon?

If you will sell or pay off before break-even months pass, payment savings may not recover fees. Compare your holding period to break-even.

Are lender policy limits modeled?

No—vehicle age, mileage, credit, and LTV caps vary by lender. Payment math only, not an offer to lend.
